Welcome!
Welcome to the home page for the Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society!
Our new and improved site is here to provide you with the most up-to-date information about the Society. Please stop by often!
Check out the Index of Library Resources to see a partial listing of what is available at the library. We are adding to this list every couple of weeks, so it is ever-changing. We have completed all of Buchanan County and are now working on the remaining counties in Missouri, alphabetically. We will then enter the Kansas counties, then all other states, then general history and international resources.
We welcome suggestions and contributions from members and non-members alike. What would make our site better for you? Please submit any ideas to admin@nwmogenealogy.com.
1940 Census Celebration
It only happens once every 10 years! On April 2, 2012 the National Archives will release the digital images of the 1940 census and we are throwing a party to celebrate!
Please join us at the East Hills Library at 6:30 P.M. for an evening to remember and appreciate all that was happening in the world during this precarious time in history. An octet from RiverSong, an all female choral group, will perform a few songs from the 40's at 6:40 P.M. Then we will hear from Jessica Edgar, of the NARA in Kansas City, about the information that can be found in the 1940 census and how it differs from those of the past.
Afterwards there will be appetizers, cake and refreshments. A raffle will be held for some great prizes from the following local businesses:
Tom's Tires
Kovac's
Lura Landis Photography (www.luralandis.com)
Delish Bakery and Cafe
Bev's Cakes
State Farm - Philip Stueve Agent
Hardee's
Cookie Cakes (www.cookiecakestore.com)
Randy Reed Chevrolet
Ci Ci's Pizza
Jimmy John's
Auto Appearance Specialties
This list will be updated weekly, as more and more businesses donate towards the event.
Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance (email admin@nwmogenealogy.com) or at the event! We look forward to seeing you there!
Getting Started in Genealogy
Great news! Beginning March 3 the NWMGS will be offering a class on how to get started in genealogy! We have been asked many times over the past year or two and have finally put all the pieces in place to be able to offer a class to meet the demand.
The class will be held on Saturday mornings, from 10:30 A.M. to noon. The first hour will be instruction time and the last 1/2 hour will be available for the students to familiarize themselves with the records available. Even if you don't have family in northwest Missouri, it will benefit you to know what kinds of materials are available and how to use them. The class will run for 8 weeks (with no class the weekend of Easter).
The class is open to anyone, however, NWMGS members will receive a discount. The class is being limited to 15 participants in order to provide the best possible learning environment. The spots are being filled on a first-come basis, so please don't wait! This would make a great gift for the genealogist in your family! How about bringing an older grandchild/niece/nephew/cousin with you?
We will accept PayPal for the class, however, to be fair for the first-come we will use the payment date as the determining factor.
All of the details are listed in the enrollment form. If you have any questions, please let us know.
St. Joseph Treasured Images - Vol. II
The St. Joseph News-Press has published a follow-up book to the wildly successful "Our St. Joseph Treasured Images". Volume II is fully indexed and contains pictures from the late 1800's up through the 1960's. The book was put together after a team sifted through thousands of pictures submitted after the first volume.
The NWMGS is happy to partner with the News-Press to bring this book to our members for just $20. They can be picked up in the library during regular business hours. If you are out of town and would like one mailed to you, there is a $4 shipping and handling charge. You can mail us the cash/check/money order and we'll be happy to get one out to you ASAP. Be sure to indicate what the money is for and to what address you would like it mailed. We can send it to a friend/family/loved one on your behalf if you would like to make it a gift.
If you would like to pay via PayPal, send us an email.
The best part is that a portion of each book sale stays with the NWMGS. We appreciate your support!
Next Meeting
The next general meeting of Northwest Missouri Genealogical Society will be held Thursday, April 26, 2012. The program will be held at 7:00 PM on the 14th floor of the Corby Building, next door to the Library. John Atkinson will be in character as William Bent, a man who managed a vast fur trading empire. Bent’s Fort was the only place of refuge and comfort on the Santa Fe Trail between the settlements of Missouri and the Mexican outposts of Taos and Santa Fe. Most of the famous people of the period passed through Bent’s Fort.
As with all programs, this presentation is free and open to the general public.
There will be a potluck dinner at the Library beforehand. Dinner will be at 6:00 PM to make sure we allow sufficient time for everybody to enjoy their food before moving next door to the Corby building.
You do not need to be a member of the NWMGS to attend either the dinner or the program!
Join us for what is sure to be an entertaining event!
